Which tree do you remember?

OT:

Umthathi. . . . Only the leaves, so when we were dishing out the meat we’d use the leaves. . . . We used umthathi to put down and place the roasted meat on top of it.

JT:

What ritual was it for?

OT:

The ritual was when we’d call the herbalists [amaxhwele] to come and make the household strong. There were herbalists in the old days. Doctors [oogqirha51].

JT:

Why did you use umthathi? Was there something special about umthathi?

OT:

It’s the tree that the old herbalists used to believe would make everything fine.52
